Wolfgang and Michelle Kaehler being kissed by a wolf.

A few years ago, I asked Michelle to come with me to Norway so I could be kissed by a wolf – she thought I was crazy.  But in Norway, above the Arctic Circle, you can do just that.  Sitting amongst a pack of five habituated wolves, we experienced the magic of the relationships between the animals and their curiosity and eagerness to interact with us.  In March of 2017 we went and saw these beautiful animals in their prime winter coats.  First Michelle did not want to go into the enclosure, but an animal keeper encouraged her – now she can’t wait to see the wolves again! In 2019 I led the first trip, and my guests were excited not only by the wolves, but also about the variety of things we saw: beautiful winter landscapes, the Northern Lights, white-tailed eagles, small, picturesque fishing villages, the Icehotel, dog sledding and many other subjects.

An aurora sometimes referred to as polar lights, northern lights (aurora borealis) is produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere here near Bjorkliden in Swedish Lapland; northern Sweden.

There of course is so much more to this Lapland Region that enchanted us.  In Norway the fjords reached between snow-covered slopes, mirroring red and white farmhouses in their placid waters.  Reindeer, in their lush winter coats, marched through snowy fields.  At Bjorkliden, in Sweden, the majestic view looked out on an immense frosted lake surrounded by pristine mountain peaks.  At night, veils of silky soft green streaks, the famous Northern Lights, slipped across the starlit sky.
