New TSA Regulations Regarding Cameras

One of my photo tour clients sent me the following information regarding the new TSA Regulations Regarding Cameras.

WASHINGTON — New security regulations issued by the Transportation Security Administration now requires cameras and other electronic devices to be placed in their own bin and screened separately.

In addition to your laptop needing its own bin, TSA’s latest regulations indicate that every camera body, lens, external flashes, and tablets would also need to be placed in bins for X-ray screening, according to an article published in consumer goods review site DPReview.

According a TSA news release, the decision to increase domestic security measures is the result of an increased threat to aviation security.

TSA representatives say that as procedures are phased in, security officers will begin asking travelers to remove electric devices larger than a cell phone from their carry-on bags and place them in a bin with nothing on top or below the item. The new process will mirror that of a laptop screening process.

The new procedure is already in place at 10 U.S. airports including:
• Boise Airport in Boise, Idaho
• Colorado Springs Airport in Colorado Springs, Colo.
• Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Detroit
• Fort-Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
• Logan International Airport in Boston
• Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles
• Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock County, Texas
• Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico
• McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas
• Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix
The stronger security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA’s Pre-Check program.
