This morning, whooper swans gathered in the steamy pool on the shore of Lake Kussharo like beautiful geisha at a hot spring.  Peacefully savoring the warm waters, some still slept with their heads tucked beneath their wings, while others began to chatter and stretch their elegant necks to preen their pristine white plumage.  About a dozen swans soared in to join the group. The wildlife here takes advantage of the geothermal action of the volcanic island.

Also a gift of the volcanic activity, Lake Masu is the Crater Lake of Hokkaido.  The crystal waters are known to be among the clearest in the world.  White birches filled the hillsides sloping down to the lake, like spectators in the grandstands awaiting an event.
