The ice has not come down from Siberia yet as we had hoped. With global warming, the ice that brings with it the plankton that feeds the region’s food chain is not as predictable as in the past. But our talented photographers boarded a boat at Rausu anyway and photographed the Steller’s sea eagles near the harbor. The photographers skillfully captured the eagles swooping over the water to snatch up fish.

After the active morning, we photographed a small Shinto shrine as the snow began falling, shrouding it in a white cloud. Buoys and fishing boats, blanketed in snow also became great subjects. After lunch we drove through flurries to the other side of the Shiretoko Peninsula to Utoro where a curious fox and another onsen (hot spring) awaited us.
